Teaching Hands Learning Academy Foundation (THLAF) was founded out of a deep commitment to educational equity and a belief that every child deserves the opportunity to succeed. Established by educator and community advocate Joyce Simmons, THLAF grew from her personal journey as a parent navigating learning challenges with her own child into a mission-driven organization serving hundreds of students across Virginia. With decades of experience in education, Ms. Simmons recognized the urgent need for hands-on, compassionate academic support that goes beyond the classroom and meets students where they are.
THLAF provides comprehensive tutoring, remediation, and enrichment services in reading, writing, mathematics, and Standards of Learning (SOL) preparation for K–12 students, including English Language Learners. Serving Title I schools and communities throughout Richmond and beyond, the organization focuses on building confidence, strengthening foundational skills, and supporting diverse learning styles through interactive, student-centered instruction. By partnering with local schools, universities, and community organizations, Teaching Hands ensures students receive individualized support while aspiring educators gain valuable hands-on teaching experience.
At the core of Teaching Hands Learning Academy Foundation is a holistic approach to empowerment—one that recognizes families and communities as essential partners in student success. In addition to academic services, THLAF supports parents through mentoring, job readiness resources, and community programming, while expanding initiatives such as childcare support for teen parents and mentorship programs for young men. Guided by the belief that education opens doors and transforms lives, Teaching Hands remains committed to developing confident learners, strengthening families, and building a stronger bridge between schools and the communities they serve.
